Good to know
- Weekend holidays. When Christmas, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day, Australia Day or Anzac Day falls on a weekend, most states add a weekday holiday (listed above as “Additional public holiday”). The rules differ between states, which is why the lists don’t match.
- Part-day holidays. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve are public holidays in some states from 6 pm or 7 pm to midnight only.
- Regional holidays. Show days, local cup days and some regional King’s Birthday or Melbourne Cup holidays are set area by area. They are not in our list: check your state’s page.
- Pay and rosters. Whether someone works or gets penalty rates on a public holiday depends on their award or agreement. The Fair Work Ombudsman explains it: public holiday penalty rates and not working on public holidays. This page is general information, not advice.
