Clearing sales, saleyards and property auctions each have their own rules. The basics most buyers wish they had known.
In most states there is no cooling-off period when you buy at auction, so the contract, finance, building and pest checks need to be done before the day. Register with the agent and read the contract of sale first.
Check the terms of sale before you bid: whether prices include GST, any buyer’s premium, when payment is due and when gear must be collected. Most items are sold as is, where is.
A Personal Property Securities Register search (by VIN or serial number, or by the seller’s name) shows whether a lender has a security interest over a machine before you pay for it.
Cattle, sheep and goats you buy must move to a property with its own Property Identification Code (PIC), and the transfer is recorded on the NLIS database. Ask for the National Vendor Declaration that travels with them.
